THE opening night of Oktoberfest did not disappoint Swindonians who braved the weather on Friday to enjoy a German experience like no other.

In spite of strong winds excitement filled the air yesterday evening as the blue marque style tents could be seen from the Cricket Club at the County Ground.

The smell of beers, pretzels and bratwurst could be smelt as I walked inside, long wooden benches were filled with drinkers dressed for the occasion – with some even dressed in traditional Bavarian costumes.

A traditional oompah band entertained the crowd playing their brass instruments to get spectators involved with the celebrations. They had a ritual that when a particular phrase was said everyone had to stand up and raise their stein and drink – this happened many a time during the night.

After the band finished playing, a DJ took over to continue until close at 11pm, classics such as Neil Diamond's Sweet Caroline, Oasis Wonderwall, The Killers Mr Brightside and many more songs had everyone singing in unison – there was something for all ages and generations.

There truly were breathtaking moments as all joined in to sing together, it turned the venue into the biggest karakoke-fest.

Oktoberfest is an experience that everyone must go to, it will get you ready for the festive season but also allows you to embrace fellow people of the town by singing, dancing and just being jolly.

Tonight is the last chance to catch this amazing event before they move on and return again in 2019.
