A DEDICATION to the men from Wanborough who died during the First World War has been created by a village resident.

Anita Basevi placed 120 handmade poppies on the front bank of Wheelwrights, Kite Hill.

There are 100 red poppies for each of the years that have passed since the armistice that ended the war, plus one red and white poppy for each man who was killed during the conflict.

The piece is called ‘In remembrance - A field of poppies’ and will remain on the bank until the morning of Remembrance Day.

Anita said: “I feel very strongly that this war should never be forgotten.

“My son is 20 and I felt uncomfortable at the thought that he would have been sent off to war and possibly never come back.

"I would have been devastated like so many other families were during that time.

“Wanborough weren’t planning to do anything for Remembrance Day other than the usual church service, so I thought I’d make this.

“I’d grown a lot of poppies on the bank in the spring so I had a lot of poppy heads left to use, though I've not done a memorial before.”

All the flowers will be removed on November 11 and made into a bouquet to be placed by the Wanborough War Memorial in St Andrews Church at the service of remembrance.

There will also be an event in Liddington Village hall on November 11 at 7pm for people to meet and remember their wartime experiences, with an exhibition of memorabilia and poetry readings.
