KIDS will get the chance to test their own inventions out at a workshop to inspire them into a career in science and technology this week.

Ben Edmonds, a local inventor and designer from Marlborough with 17 year’s experience in the industry, is launching the Inventors Club at Swindon UTC on Wednesday.

The club, aimed at 7-14 year-olds, will give them hands-on experience designing and problem solving, pitching ideas, even basic electronics skills.

He aims to inspire the next generation of innovators in STEM subjects, and to show them the process of invention and discovery is part and parcel with failure.

Ben told the Adver: “With innovation, the process always includes failure. We have an idea, we test it, it fails, we learn, and we try again. This is how the greatest and most life changing inventions of all time have happened, and usually by accident when the inventor was failing at trying to make something else.

“If we raise kids who are scared to fail, the knock on effect is they become scared to try. And if we have kids who are scared to try new things, we lose the potential to save the world.”

Ben himself has three daughters, aged four, eight and 10 and say they are all engineers in the making.

“I caught my eldest making a hammock out of some bed sheets,” he said.

“But the most exciting thing is getting to these kids at this age, who aren’t tainted by that self-doubt.

“I want to teach them that they can do anything, that’s what I’m most passionate about.”

The first Inventor Club will be held at Swindon UTC college on Wednesday November 7 in three 90-minute sessions for ages ranging from 7-14.

The first group will run from 5pm until 6.30pm and will be for 7-9 year-olds, and the final session will be from 8 til 9.30pm for 12-14 year-olds.
