Several residents on quiet Studland Close said their carbon monoxide alarms had gone off earlier this afternoon, with a Swindon Borough Council officer called out to investigate.
Neighbours tonight described their shock at seeing the huge emergency service response to the fire, at around 4pm this afternoon.
Pauline Mears, 72, said: “It’s a lovely area. This is a shock.”
Douglas Warman, 77, added: “You don’t normally see anything like this around here at all. It’s so peaceful and quiet.
“I couldn’t believe it when I looked out."
