A plan to build two houses on a narrow strip of land between two densely populated streets in Upper Stratton will be discussed and decided next week.

Councillors on Swindon Borough Council's planning committee will consider the proposal the Dean Jefferies Construction to build two detached houses between Orchard Grove and Haig Close.

If the plan is approved, two small Victorian semi-detached houses in the middle of the site will also be renovated creating four new homes.

An earlier proposal to build two houses on the strip of disused grass between the back gardens of the streets was turned down in March last year, and the application has come to the committee at the request of Stratton St Margaret Parish Council which objects to the plan.

Of concern to the council and local residents is the tricky access to the site, on a single- car-width driveway, about 85 metres long, between two houses, which then opens out into the plot forming a T-shape.

The proposals show the developers hope to create six parking spaces, with two each for the new houses at either end of the plot, and one apiece for the semi-detached homes.

Residents have said they're concerned about access to the site for emergency vehicles, and that the tightness of parking and access will lead the inhabitants of the homes to park in Orchard Grove, adding to congestion

Nevertheless the planners' report to the committee recommends that they give the scheme the green light: "The restoration of existing dwellings and also the delivery of additional dwellings that would make efficient use of this presently unkempt residential land."

The meeting is at 6pm on Tuesday.
