A HOMELESS man has been charged with outraging public decency after the Cenotaph was vandalised on Saturday morning.

Ashwani Kumar, aged 54, of no fixed address, Swindon, has been remanded in custody.

He is due to appear at Salisbury Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

The charge follows an incident in the early hours of Saturday morning, when 50 poppy wreaths were ripped from the Regent Street war memorial and thrown 80 metres from the monument.

The action prompted widespread anger from police, politicians and public. Chief Constable Kier Pritchard said: “This was a mindless act of vandalism and shows complete disregard for those service men and women that have given the ultimate sacrifice in service of this country." Robert Buckland, South Swindon MP, branded the incident "an insult to the memory of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice".
