HUNDREDS of tonnes of extra salt has been delivered to increase Swindon's winter stock for the gritting lorries.

As the cold nights continue, more than 500 tonnes of salt were delivered to Waterside - an amount which weighs as much as 83 adult African elephants.

The council slopes the salt in order to fit more deliveries into the container, which can hold up to 3,500 tonnes of salt which will be used to make roads safer and fill public grit bins. A spokesman said they are fully prepared to grit roads and fill public grit bins if and when they receive bad weather.

The council posted a video of their salt depot on their Twitter page, which featured a staff member called Bob, nicknamed the Winter Soldier.
