HONDA has confirmed 350 casual staff will be let go next month.

The company said 200 fixed-term contract staff and 150 agency staff will not have their temporary contracts renewed in March.

Although it said the decision was unrelated to Brexit and already part of the company's future plans.

A spokesman for Honda said: “From February 2019, production volumes at Honda of the UK Manufacturing will reduce to 570 cars per day, which is broadly in line with our original plan. Our resourcing model includes the use of fixed-term contracts, which enables us to remain agile and react to market demands.

“As a result of the reduction in production volumes, we have reviewed our resource requirements for the remainder of this financial year, and the following year, and confirmed the end dates of some employees on fixed term contracts.”

Responding to the announcement Labour candidate for South Swindon Sarah Church said: “The news from Honda that they will not be renewing about 200 fixed term contracts and letting 150 agency staff go in March is not good news for Swindon. Uncertainty and falling demand in the marketplace are having a direct impact here.

“While Honda keep people on insecure contracts, they have the flexibility to cut numbers, but the impact of these job losses could be up to 500 more job losses in the wider supply chain. There is genuine worry amongst those affected about their future ability to find work.”

The plant will also have six non-production days in April after March 29 in preparation for any disruption caused Brexit.
