More firefighters from under-represented groups in the Wiltshire fire brigade are wanted.
That includes women and people from ethnic minorities, and senior officers are serious about trying to make the Dorset and Wiltshire Brigade more diverse.
Assistant chief fire officer Mick Stead told councillors on the service's fire authority that there was a new corporate priority to get 20 per cent of new recruits over the next year from such under-represented groups.
He said: "We've made it a target because we knew we couldn't increase our diversity just through normal recruitment efforts because people from those groups will also leave us during the year."
Mr Stead politely rejected a suggestion that the wording of the target should be softened from "will recruit 20 percent from under-represented groups" to include the word "try".
He said: "I think we should set a high challenging bar - it's important for the culture of this service" and welcomed a change to say "at least 20 per cent".
