DOZENS of homes across Swindon were left unable to watch TV after weather disrupted the signal.

Viewers using Freeview TV have been hit with problems over the past couple of days, with more than 100 households complaining to the downdetector.co.uk website.

Su Taylor-Mills, 43, of Old Town, ended up turning the TV off after the signal suddenly cut off on Wednesday night. “It was frustrating as we were in the middle of watching a show on BBC1,” she said.

“So, we ended up scrolling through to see what was working to realise it was all off and we were not getting any signal what so ever. I tried again this morning to sit down and watch but it was glitching all over again.

“I understand that the weather can affect the signal but the weather last night and this morning wasn’t that bad.

“This seems to be happening a lot lately and I’m sure with the technology that is around nowadays this shouldn’t be still an issue.”

But there is nothing the platform can do apart from waiting for the weather to pass, according to a spokesman at Freeview. The signal is set to return by the weekend in Swindon and in other affected places.

He said: “Current high-pressure weather conditions could unfortunately cause picture break up or loss of channels for some viewers in the south west and parts of southern England.

“Please don’t retune your TV reception should improve by the end of tomorrow. Viewers can still watch live and on-demand TV through players such as BBC iPlayer and ITV Hub on an internet connected Freeview Play TV.

“Alternatively, viewers can live stream shows via the Freeview mobile app.”

Some householders expressed their worries for older people and those living alone. Craig Bartlett, from Park North, said: “I can watch on the computer using wi-fi or mobile signal, but a lot of old people use the TV as company, and I’m worried about them. It’s poor not to provide something as basic as a good signal. Perhaps there should be a campaign to get a better signal for Swindon.

“We get our signal from Oxford and it’s always low strength. If there’s anything in the weather between us, then it’s affected. It goes bad in summer as well in the hot weather.”
