A WOMEN'S refuge invited one of Swindon's top choirs to sing at an alternative Valentine's celebration.

Sheila Harrod's Kentwood Choir sang show songs and other foot stompers at the "Galentine's" concert on Friday.

Olwen Kelly, director of Swindon Women's Aid, said: "The concert went really well. We invited a number of our women who we're working with at the moment. The idea of the night was just to have some fun and for the women to enjoy themselves. It was a feelgood factor event, without the traditional celebration of Valentine's.

"We wanted to show that life can be good without a partner. It's not the be-all and end-all. It's better to be on your own and safe than with the wrong partner."

The night saw the Inner Wheel Club of North Wiltshire and the Rotary Club of North Swindon hand over £2,033 to Women's Aid. Nicky Alberry, chairman of trustees, said the donation was a great way to start the evening.
