A MOTION to change the way the mayor of Royal Wootton Bassett is selected will be debated tonight.

Currently the majority group of councillors chooses to nominate the towns mayor each year. The council is split into nine conservative members and seven Liberal Democrats but the mayorship has been dominated by the conservatives for the past 20 years.

Deputy mayor Steve Watts was nominated to replace mayor by Mike Farrow in May.

Councillors David Bowley Caroline Redmond wrote: "A significant number of councillors of RWB have expressed the view they have no confidence in the selection process currently in place to select and nominate the mayor and deputy may for the civic year 2019/20.

"This motion calls for an immediate change in the current policy of selecting a mayor and deputy mayor from the majority group to better reflect the make-up of the electors and their representatives of this council."
