TRADE unions representing Honda workers across Europe have pledged their support to the Save Honda Swindon campaign.

Workers from Belgium, France, Turkey, Italy and Spain met at the Unite headquarters in London to map out European-wide action to save the plant from closure.

The meeting, convened by IndustriALL Europe, comes amid fears from European trade unions that closure of the South Marston plant will lead to more plant closures across the continent.

The plans discussed so far have included organised stoppages in solidarity with the Honda workers in Swindon, who are faced with the plant closing by 2021 with the direct loss of 3,500 jobs.

Unite national officer Des Quinn: “All the trade unions representing Honda workers across Europe are determined to save Honda’s Swindon plant from closure.

"There is a real fear that if Swindon goes, other plant closures across Europe could happen.

“We all believe that there is a compelling case for Honda to stay in the UK and will continue to work jointly as a plan is put together to persuade Honda to reverse its decision to close Swindon.

“Honda workers in Swindon should be in no doubt. Their colleagues across Europe are standing with them, as Honda Swindon workers are standing with them too.”

IndustriALL Europe represents seven million manufacturing, mining and energy workers across the continent.
