A POLISH rescue dog’s new owner is hoping to raise enough cash for an operation that would free him from pain.

Uggie, a mongrel, was involved in two car accidents in Poland, leaving him with serious injuries, including broken legs.

He was taken into an animal shelter in Chorzow, south Poland.

And Agnieszka Korzuch, of Eldene, adopted him in February after seeing his profile on Facebook.

She said: “He looked like a different dog back then, his eyes were so sad and empty. I knew that disabled dog won’t attract potential homes."

The shelter told Agnieszka that Uggie was fit to travel. She then paid more than £200 to bring him to the UK.

“I have been told that he’s healthy, but that he won’t be using his back leg," she said. "After a few weeks with us, I took him for a routine check-up with the vets. They noticed straight away that his leg was broken, that he is in pain.”

Agnieszka borrowed money to pay for the £750 surgery, held on March 15 at Vet’s Klinic, Swindon. “It was impossible to tell that he’s suffering, he doesn’t show pain at all. He was able to scratch himself with that leg. The x-rays showed how bad it was and the vets decided to amputate the next day,” she said.

“He’s recovering well, he ran out of the clinic after the operation, but sadly his front leg was also broken a while ago and now, he is putting more weight on it, causing him pain and restricting his mobility.

“He’s got some behaviour issues as well but that’s to be expected from a dog that experienced months of pain, we will be working on it now.

She added: “Uggie has immediately become part of our family. He’s a really lovely dog, he loves us, and he loves life so I will do everything to help him. The situation with the shelter he came from will be clarified and if anyone caused his suffering, they will be held responsible.”

Agnieszka is now saving money to pay for Uggie’s second surgery: “Once I pay back the money I borrowed for his operation, I will start saving for looking into his front leg. At the moment I simply can’t afford it.

“But nothing will be done any time soon as he needs to recover from all the operations he had in the last few months including a castration and the amputation. I don’t want to risk and put him in general anaesthetic until he fully recovers.”

She set up a GoFundMe page at gofundme.com/help-uggy-walk-again, asking for assistance.

“I would really appreciate financial help as it would definitely shorten the time, he has to wait to get his front paw fixed,” she said.
