DEBENHAMS’ Swindon store is not one of the 22 across the UK set to close in 2020.

The department store chain announced earlier it would close shops in towns around the country as part of a restructure deal. Around 1,200 jobs will be lost.

It is expected that another 28 stores will shut. It is not known whether Swindon’s town centre Debenhams shop, based in the ageing 1960s Falcon House block by Fleming Way, will close.

Terry Duddy, executive chairman, said: "Debenhams has a clear strategy and a bright future, but in order for the business to prosper, we need to restructure the group's store portfolio and its balance sheet, which are not appropriate for today's much changed retail environment.

"Our priority is to save as many stores and as many jobs as we can, while making the business fit for the future."
