FRIDGES, TVs and mattresses are among the items being dumped on the streets of Grange Park amid fears the fly-tipping plague in the area is getting worse.

Amanda Brisco and a group of angry locals are fed up with finding illegally-dumped waste on Marney Road.

“It started with small items, but people kept dumping their waste and it’s now getting bigger,” said Amanda.

“I went online to report the issue and opened the case, but the council closed it, saying that they can’t do anything because it is on a private land. They used to pick it up but suddenly stopped.”

Amanda has been living in the area for a decade and added: “The situation has got worse as people moving in and out are dumping their stuff.

“It is right in front of my window, so we can only see that. If nothing is done, there will be rats and it will smell bad.”

Others living near the pile of rubbish have also been calling for the council to tackle the issue.

A 54-year-old woman, who wished not to be named, added: “It’s just horrendous because that’s the first thing we see in the morning.

“Kids can’t even play in the area because it is too dangerous.

“I moved here two years ago and it has definitely got worse. People used to have barbecues in the area where there’s now all the rubbish.

“It is unfair because we recycle and some people think it is fine to dump their rubbish.

“There are five of us all in a row who are unhappy about it and nothing has been done.

“We will raise money and try to clean it privately.”

There have been similar problems across the town, with a recent case of a waste fire in Broadgreen severely destroying a garden fence.

A Swindon Borough Council spokesman said: “We always encourage residents to report fly-tipping to us and we aim to respond to every report.

“Unfortunately, we don’t appear to have received any reports of fly-tipping in the Grange Park area over recent weeks.

“However, if the residents would like to email WasteEnforcement@swindon.gov.uk, detailing the location of the fly-tipped items and what kind of items they are, we will urgently investigate.”
