THREE choirs will be show casing their talents next month at a musical extravaganza to help the homeless.

The High Sheriff of Wiltshire’s charity concert will raise money for Swindon Cares, which is supporting Swindon Night Shelter as its charity partner for the next two years.

The show at Christ Church on June 8 will feature entertainment from three Swindon based choirs, Ten in a Bar, The JTP Trust Concert Choirs and The Kentwood Show Choir.

BBC Wiltshire Breakfast Show presenter Ben Prater will compere the event.

Jill Hodge, director of Ten in a Bar said: “This year promises to be a musical extravaganza which will appeal to anyone who loves singing.”

The choir began in 1993 and boasts 15 members who sing a variety of light entertainment music in close harmony.

“It’s nice that the evening will be in support of a Swindon based charity. I know the big national charities all touch our lives, but it’s nice that the evening will be all about Swindon and those that help our community,” said Mrs Hodge.

Swindon Night Shelter, chosen by High Sheriff David Scott, provides temporary accommodation for homeless people in St Mary’s Church Hall on Cheney Manor Road. Last year 174 people were hosted by the shelter.

The Kentwood Show Choir is led by Sheila Harrod and has 28 members between 14 and 65 years old. The choir has a 30-year history singing a broad range of light classics, jazz, blues, big band and musical theatre, among others.

“We’re going to keep the evening a bit upbeat and lively, so the audience can go home with a spring in their step,” said Mrs Harrod. “We’re all very much looking forward to performing. It should be a lovely evening."

Swindon Cares has been fundraising for the last 17 years, bringing in more than £287,000 in total for charitable, community and voluntary organisations in Swindon.

The JPT Trust Concert Choirs will sing three pieces from the musical Cats by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The charity educates young people about singing and aims to develop and maintain the standard of singing in Swindon.

Trust director Janice Thompson said: “We’re very excited for the evening. We’re delighted to be taking part because we love taking part in charitable events and indeed all events.”

Mrs Hodge added: “Each choir is very different so no one should get bored during the evening. The standard of singing should be very high.”

“I’m really pleased to see that choirs are really catching on now and that there are loads of choirs in the Swindon district,” said Mrs Harrod.

Tickets are £6 or £15 including a light buffet and wine reception after the performance.
