SWINDON'S newest mural is all about spreading a little bit of positivity about the town.

So says one of the artists behind the creation in Regent Close.

Close to the Wyvern Theatre, the finished piece features warm colours, a quote from Swindon author Richard Jefferies about locality, and a great bustard – a bird that represents Swindon and Wiltshire.

Swindon-born street artist Martin Travers, who runs educational programmes in Amsterdam and Kathmandu travelled back to Swindon to work on the mural.

He worked alongside Peter Crowdy who lives in Swindon.

Peter said: “I was excited to have an opportunity like this in my town, and especially to work with Martin.

"When I saw his work, I was really excited for the opportunity.”

The mural was first planned to be on Aspen House but after Swindon Borough Council sold the property, it was decided it should go on Regent Close.

Peter said: “We wanted to highlight elements of Swindon that were positive, to give a sense of hope and positivity for the future.”

The Jefferies quote says: 'If every plant and flower were found in all places, the charm of locality would not exist. Everything varies, and that gives the interest.'

Von Grey, 44, who came to see the finished piece said: “It's fantastic. This is a step in the right direction for Swindon.

"When I was a kid growing up here, this town was full of murals.

“Swindon is a hotbed of talent, it always has been.

"And what this piece says to me about Swindon is that there could be a change of direction to actually attract more talent here and to keep them here.”

Paul Exton, 69, said the mural was a good addition, adding: “It’s a good step forward in creativity.”

Dale Heenan, the council’s cabinet member for the town centre, said: “This mural is the brainchild of Artsite and paid for by businesses, through inSwindon BID.”

Its CEO Di Powell said: “Collaboration between Swindon Borough Council, Artsite, the artists and everyone involved has led to the mural continuing on time. It wouldn’t have happened without the support of businesses in the town centre."
