There is traffic chaos on the major road between Swindon and Wroughton after it was closed this morning for emergency repairs.

The road will be shut for two to three weeks near the Grange housing development for work on the sewage drains.

But road users have hit out at the way Thames Water has managed the situation.

A local driver told The Adver: “They haven’t taken into consideration the traffic.

“They could have provided traffic lights on both ends so there wouldn’t have been this much chaos.

“There’s no road signage at all to tell people that this is going on, so people don’t realise until they reach the road and are getting stuck in the traffic.”

The road is currently shut between Prospect Hospice at Wroughton and Croft Road in Swindon.

In a statement Thames Water said: “Carrying out this work is essential to ensuring the damaged sewer does not flood nearby properties and damage the environment.

“We’re sorry to anyone who will be impacted by the temporary road closure but it’s necessary to ensure the work can be carried out safely.”

A spokesperson for the council said: “We are reviewing the traffic management procedures that are currently in place while the road is closed to ensure that members of the public remain safe.”
