ASDA workers in Swindon are furious over new contracts they have been offered by the company.

The new contracts are said to include a £9 an hour base rate but the GMB union has claimed it also includes unpaid breaks as well as changes to the night shift and less stability.

Asda have said that the new contracts will make their employees better off with better pay and allow stores the flexibility to place workers in the right places at the right times to help deal with customers.

Here’s what you said on Facebook:

Kay Lyn Horsley: “So they are increasing the pay a little and taking away paid breaks, holiday and security of shifts? Sounds like they are certainly not better off.”

Joe Allenden: “Profit over people always, doesn’t matter what company.

“Share holders want more money, it’s the normal people that pay the price.”

Martin Costello: “Absolutely appalling. Always greed and money over the welfare of people, what a rotten society we live in.”

Cerys Felicity Brown: “The last statement on this post is absolute rubbish. It says they don’t want any of their colleagues to leave yet they have all been told if they don’t sign the new contract they will have to leave?

“Don’t want them to leave? Don’t force them to sign a stupid contract.”

Phil Halsell: “Competitive industry. Stand still and fail or reform and survive.

“There are two large Asda stores just three miles apart.

“They could quite easily close one. Remember, Lidl is due to open at the Orbital soon.”

Marie Haddrell: “Sad time in retail at the moment, it’s going to happen everywhere slowly.”

Kathy Kerr: “I don’t know a great deal about the legalities of this but surely the contract you sign when the employees started working is legal and binding?

“If this is correct then Walmart are also bound to this contract? Forcing someone to sign a new contract and saying if they don’t sign, is technically blackmail.

“I most likely am wrong. Good luck to all employees.”

June Beveridge: “This has been done before. WH Smith told their workers to sign a new contract for less money or leave.

“Those that left had to sign a form to say they wouldn’t go to the press and this was in 2008/9”

Katie Coates: “Why is everyone so surprised?

“It’s totally appalling, I agree, and I feel so much for the employees who deserve so much better, this is a disgrace.

“However, it’s happening more and more where employers are getting away with treating staff badly. With the onset of zero-hour contracts, employment rights are being eroded more and more.

“It’s just awful, but if people keep voting for those who are responsible for the increase then it will never actually change.”

Eric Edwards: “Companies are trying to treat workers so bad these days.

“Where I work, if they take anyone on a full-time contract, it is different to what I am on.”

Sharon Safe: “Apparently their hourly rate has gone up, so not all bad.”

Emma Louise: “I’m just glad I left this place when I did, we could all see then how bad it was getting and I didn’t want to get caught up in any forced contract changes which were being talking about.”

Rachel Butler: “It’s not just the breaks, it’s the whole contract they’re changing for people that have been working there 20+ years and they have to accept it or leave.”

Darrell Edwards: “Don’t worry, it will shut like everything else soon anyway.”
