NORTH Swindon MP hopeful Kate Linnegar has backed Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s election stance.

It follows the delivery of leaflets to homes this weekend that seemed to be at odds with the party’s refusal to support Boris Johnson’s plan to call a general election before the UK falls out of the European Union.

In the leaflets – versions of which have gone out across the country – Ms Linnegar says: “We need a general election now so you can make your own choice about the way forward for Britain.”

On Wednesday, Mr Corbyn instructed his MPs to vote against a government motion that would have resulted in a general election being held on October 15.

On social media, Swindon Conservatives said of the letter: “Corbyn running scared, hard left Linnegar demands action now.”

Ms Linnegar, who was selected to fight the North Swindon seat for Labour last April, said the text of the letters delivered this week was written several weeks ago.

She backed her party leader’s stance on Mr Johnson’s election proposals: “I believe we do need a general election to remove this damaging government. But we can’t do that until we have passed legislation to stop a disastrous no deal.”
