TWIGS Community Gardens hosted its first apple fayre on Saturday, raising roughly £2,000 for the charity.
“It’s been a wonderful day,” said organiser Tory Phipps, fundraiser for the community garden.
“We had about 340 people attend, it’s been so busy.”
David Harrison from Mates Cider Company loaned the use of an apple press for the afternoon, estimating he pressed 300kg of apples into 150 litres of juice. His wife Carole is a volunteer at the gardens.
“We just thought it would be something a bit different to do as a fundraiser,” said David.
Visitors could even bring their own apples to press.
The afternoon included pizzas cooked in the garden’s own oven, garden games and stalls selling local produce including, cakes, jams and teas.
Live music was also provided by Talis Kimberley-Fairbourn, Chantell Smith, The Bellflowers, The Goddard Ensemble Wind Quintet & Steve Russell.
The fundraiser was held to support TWIGS’ work with mental health patients.
“We certainly have plans to do this again next year,” added Tory.
