Campaigners from Stop Swindon Greyhound Racing will be outside Swindon Borough Council’s office on Euclid Street tomorrow.

Councillors on the authority’s planning committee will be discussing the details of the proposed redevelopment of Abbey Stadium in North Swindon at 6pm.

The owners, Gaming International, have permission to knock down the 1940s structure and build new facilities for both spectators and competitors, and need to have the committee sign off on the specific details.

The stadium is used as the home of the Swindon Robins speedway team in summer and is also used for greyhound racing.

The campaigners will be lobbying the councillors to allow speedway at the stadium but not the dog racing.

In May, activist Stephanie Poyntz told the Adver: Stephanie said: “Since January of this year, there have been 33 incidents at the Swindon track of dogs being bumped, knocked over, hitting the railings or not finishing races. The poor construction of tracks can lead greyhounds to be injured during races from falls and collisions into the rails and many dogs are then put down if an owner deems to be too expensive to treat the injury.”
