Beat the Street is encouraging exercise and competition across the town, and one school is currently sitting pretty at the top of the charts.

Haydonleigh Primary has 192,860 points from its 878 members, 30,000 more points than Orchid Vale in second place.

The impressive lead is something that Debbie Yockney, the senior teaching assistant at the school, is keen to keep.

She said: “We’re working really hard to maintain the lead.

“We’re doing school events, reminding the children to get out there and keep going.

“Of course we’re worried about half term, everything could change then.”

Alongside taking part in Beat the Street herself, Debbie is keen that the school does everything possible to keep the momentum going. She said: “During half term we will be encouraging the children to get out there with their families.

“We want to have a few events, like meet-ups, at the school so we can keep it flowing.

“We’ve had a few wet days but if you just put on your wellies and your waterproofs then you don’t have an excuse.”

One helpful factor for Haydonleigh is its size.

“The school is quite lucky because it’s quite a large school, but the support from parents and grandparents has been amazing,” Debbie added.

“Since we finished third last year we’ve been hoping that it would happen again.

“Once this was announced the whole school has been excited.”
