HOMEOWNERS have been urged to step up their security to prevent burglaries.

Simon Hay, an insurance specialist at Lycetts, is recommending that people use the latest technology in their homes.

The warning comes after the Office for National Statistics revealed the number of burglaries in the south west in the last year.

Wiltshire has had 1,926 residential burglaries since June 2018 – the lowest in the region.

He said: “Smart home security systems, which allow you to be connected to your home 24/7 at the touch of a button, can help fortify a home and give you peace of mind.”

“Traditional security measures, such as standard alarm boxes, robust fencing and locking windows and doors, can act as powerful visual deterrents but the Internet of Things has made it easier than ever to set up a smart home, in which you can remotely control and monitor your home using your smartphone and an app.”

The county also saw 327 robberies and 1,139 non-residential burglaries during the same period.

Simon said: “Review privacy settings on social media platforms, refrain from posting too much about your daily life or flaunting wealth, and only share holiday snaps once you’ve returned home. Don’t forget about privacy settings on information sharing apps, such as running and cycling apps, which record your daily routine.”
