Gritters with names like Jon Snow, Brad Grit and Usain Salt could be doing their bit to keep the county's roads open this winter.

Wiltshire Council has invested in a new fleet of gritting lorries and it wants the public to come up with names for all of them

Cabinet member for highways at the council Bridget Wayman said: “These new gritters are our frontline response to snow and ice and people will see them out and about in the coming months.

“It’s a great opportunity to name our new fleet and I’d love people to come up with fun, clean, original names, indeed people may want to come up with local names, so please send in your ideas – our gritters need names.”

In Suffolk there are lorries named Jon Snow and Snow Patrol. Buckinghamshire has named its gritters Salt and Vinegar, USS Enterplough, Sir Spreadmund Hilary, Roald Plough and Obi Wan Kesnowbi.

Yorkshire roads are patrolled by Gritty McGritface and Spreadie Mercury.

To enter into the competition visit Wiltshire Council’s Facebook page and Twitter and post the name using the hashtag #WiltsGritterComp.

Wiltshire Council is armed with more than 11,000 tonnes of salt placed throughout the county at six different storage locations to combat ice and snow.

The weather will be monitored during the winter by a dedicated team.

The gritters, which have low emission engines, will cover 726 miles of roads throughout the county.
