THE TRIAL of a man accused of injuring another by driving his car at the alleged victim on New Years’ Eve ended before it had even begun yesterday.
Terrence Maughan, 23, of Arthur Place, Reading, had been charged with wounding with intent and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. The charges related to an incident on New Years’ Eve and the early hours of New Years’ Day this year, where a man was injured after it was alleged Maughan drove a car along Elgin Drive – trapping his supposed victim.
Swindon Crown Court
Hannah Squire, prosecuting, said warrants had been issued to try and bring the victim and another crucial Crown witness before the court.
But the pair, who are now based in Scotland, were no-shows and the warrants could not be served.
“In those circumstances the Crown offers no evidence,” Ms Squire said.
Formal not guilty verdicts were recorded. Judge Jason Taylor QC said: “As far as you are concerned, Mr Maughan, that is the end of the matter. If you go downstairs you will be released in due course.”
