HIGHWAYS England has promised to keep disruption to a minimum for cyclists ahead of major works at Junction 15 of the M4.
There are fears among Swindon's cycling community that the widening of the A419 may mean the closure of Day House Lane for more than a year.
It is a popular route and provides access to the south of the town. Members of Swindon Wheelers are puzzled as to why the road is earmarked for closure and wrote to the government body responsible for the country's motorways for an explanation.
In response, a lead project manager for Highways England wrote: "We have not quite settled on the methodology for the removal and re-erecting of the bridge but there will be times when there will be no public access under it.
"I do appreciate your comments, however, and we will keep this time to a minimum."
The proposed works were due to start in September and were expected to last 18 months, but no progress is expected until after the general election.
