Singing sensation Steven Tilley wants to emulate the career of Michael Bublé after wowing care home residents across Swindon.

Steven, 16, discovered his talent one night at a Morocco karaoke bar while on holiday. His rendition of Come Fly with Me was something that took even his parents Lana and Neil by surprise.

He said: “I said to my mum I’m going up to do a Frank Sinatra song. She had never heard me sing before so she was a bit like ‘do you actually know what you’re doing?’

“I got up, and at that time I wasn’t great, but she was really surprised.”

That wasn’t the first time Steven knew he had the ability to sing – he first discovered it while he was fishing.

“Me and my gramps used to go fishing all the time when I was younger,” Steven added.

“We used to listen to all that sort of old music together and sing along while we were fishing.

“I had such a love for the music that I just wanted to get up and do a song and it went really well.”

Since discovering his talent, the Coleview teen has been taking every job he can get including open mic nights and singing at care homes.

Steven regularly sings at three care homes, Wemyss Lodge, Lansdowne Hill and Edgehill.

He said: “I did my National Citizen Service and part of that was to help the community, so me and few friends went to an old people’s home and I asked if it was alright if I sang.

“They really enjoyed it and asked me back, so now I’ve got some regular gigs there which I really enjoy.

“Some of the dementia patients will be sat there. I’ll start singing and you’ll see their foot start tapping and they will look up and smile, some of them will sing along. It’s really nice.”

Zoe Ratcliff, activities co-ordinator at Edgehill, said: “The first time he came in, as he was singing, some of the residents thought that the radio was on.

“The era of songs he sings is fantastic. He’s a lovely lad, dresses well and has a lovely singing voice.”

Alongside the pub gigs and the care home shows, Steven also plays in goal for Royal Wootton Bassett Town under-18s and has a carpentry apprenticeship with Swindon College.

“The only day I have off is Saturday,” Steven said: “That’s when I do the care homes and sometimes on a Sunday or Wednesday evening my dad drives me to open mic nights to practice.

“I have to fit singing in somehow so it’s all about when I have some free time.”

Her performed at the Old Town Christmas lights switch-on last month, saying: “It is the biggest gig I’ve had. It was massive.”
