THE parents of a baby boy who died after being born prematurely have launched a special fundraising challenge for the New Year.

Little Oscar Paul lost his battle for life at just 28 days old in 2010. He had been born 15 weeks early and would be set to turn 10 on June 7 of this year.

His mum and dad, Charlotte and Karl Paul, are planning to embark on Oscar's 10 for 10 challenge in his memory.

The Rodbourne Cheney couple's efforts will see them complete half marathons, walk 40 miles on the Cotswold Plod and take plat in a half Ironman event. The 10th date will be a gala in the autumn and the aim is to raise £10,000 for Ronald McDonald House in Bristol.

The charity provides free 'home away from home' accommodation to families while their child is in hospital and supported Charlotte and Karl at the worst time in their lives.

Charlotte, 32, of Cornwall Avenue, said: “Losing our son was terrible.

"He was such a fighter, he had an operation on his bowel at six days old, suffered from a blood infection and he still showed such strength. At 28 days he slipped away and we will never forget him.”

Oscar was born at the Great Western Hospital at 25 weeks and two days’ gestation, weighing in at just 1lb and 14oz.

He then transferred to St Michael’s Hospital in Bristol, where he had a bowel operation at six days old.

Oscar suffered a blood infection before having a lumbar puncture, several blood transfusions and daily tests. He died on July 6.

Charlotte and Karl have brought three daughters into the world – four-year-old Cora, Libby who is six and their eight-year-old sister Erin.

Karl is well known in Swindon’s business community as the founder of digital marketing and SEO agency Smarter Media. Charlotte also works for the business.

Karl, 38, said: “Charlotte and I are blessed to now have three beautiful daughters however for us, we have four children and we have always made sure Oscar is part of our lives.

"This year we will honour him in this way and perhaps help parents who are also going through a very difficult time.”

Over the years the Pauls have helped to raise around £45,000 for Ronald McDonald House.

They have also bought an incubator for the special care baby unit at the hospital.
