A STUDY revealed that air pollution is causing proportionally more deaths in Swindon than any other major town or city in the region.

The report was run by independent think tank the Centre for Cities.

The figures show that 97 people over the age of 25 in the borough died from air pollution in 2017.

Here’s what you told us....

Brett Slipper: “Try planting trees, not building homes and removing the green space.”

Willy Seavanos: “Well, stop building more houses which bring in more people and more cars. Plant trees and create a forest.”

James Beckett: “£2.60 to travel two miles on the bus, there’s a huge problem there. Improve public transport and make it cheaper so more people use it.

“Improve cycling infrastructure also, more people will use it if it’s there.”

Mark Levett: “It’s only going to get worse with all the planned new houses.”

James Carol: “ Every few months another set of figures tell us how bad the air in Swindon is. Then nothing happens.

“The willingness of the public/politicians to turn a blind eye to the pollution and climate disaster we all face is alarming.

“Disaster capitalism is being presented as the norm when it couldn’t be further away. This is our environment and our futures. It is not up for profit.”

Pauline Hobbs: “Sitting outside schools for an hour before children come out with the engine running doesn’t help either.”

Gillian Freeman: “Curtis Street is terribly polluted. Traffic is often at standstill.”

Gary Eddolls: “No great surprise really, roadworks that overrun, lane closures, cars parked on either side of the road, all this adds to congestion leading up to poor air quality.”

‘NFN’: “Reviewing public transport in Swindon would be a good start.

“The frequency of busses in Swindon does not seem to change throughout daylight hours. They run if they are full or empty. Looking at peak loadings and adjusting the timetable accordingly could reduce pollution.

“Making slight changes to the routes would also help. One example is Bristol Street by the Mechanics, it sees the same volume of buses going into town as well as out, diverting one of the routes via Farringdon Road would make it healthier for the residents who live there.

“Most of Stagecoach buses running around the town are between 10 and 15 years old.

“Cleaner and greener vehicles are available, but it looks like they don’t want to make the investment.

“SBC should revoke a bus company’s licence to operate if their vehicles do not reach an acceptable standard.”

‘Andy1960’: “Pollution didn’t kill these people although it may have contributed to shortening their lives.

“As with all stories of this type across the UK it is knee jerk fear mongering and should be properly reported

“Pollution may shorten lives by a few days, a couple of weeks or a few months for those who suffer from serious lung issues.”

‘Griograch’: “Is it any wonder that pollution is bad around Swindon?

“And to say that people should use other means to get around is impossible for many of us like me who physically cannot use or get to a bus or cycle.

“In addition going to electric cars will not solve the problem only cause an environmental headache for the future with the mountain of batteries that cannot be recycled.”

‘GritTheOyster’: “The only way to fix Kingshill will be to demolish houses and plant trees.

“Swindon has massive traffic issues which the council seems completely unable to address. Instead they just push for hundreds more homes which will only make the problem worse!”
