WIZARDS weaved their magic at a town centre bookstore as a popular Harry Potter-inspired event proved a huge success.

More than 100 fans of the J K Rowling series did battle in Triwizard Tournament challenges at Waterstones, replicating scenes that saw Hogwarts take on Durmstrang and Beauxbatons in the blockbuster films.

Activities included duelling, Quidditch bowling and Triwizard charades.

Senior bookseller Debbie Phillips said: “It is chaos and it’s brilliant and we love it.

“It’s the highlight of our year as well as most of our young customers. Every Harry Potter fan should absolutely try and get a ticket to one of these as they’re amazing.

“We have loads of games, loads of activities, it is just a night to celebrate everything Harry Potter and everything we love about the wizarding world.”

The sell-out event came complete with its very own Goblet of Fire – the 'impartial judge' for the tournament. It was created by a friend of the store and actually changed colour.

Debbie added: “We’re using that to sort people into their houses because it changes colour depending which house they’re in.”

House points were awarded and prizes handed out at the end of the evening.

“The prizes are very cool,” Debbie told the Adver.

“They’re all Potter-related, obviously. We sell a lot of Potter merchandise so it may be that we’ve selected one or two items from our range.”

Susan Henderson from Wootton Bassett was at the event with her daughter Poppy and friend Abi.

She said: “My daughter and her friend are big Harry Potter fans and we saw it advertised so thought we would come along.”

Poppy, 9, added: “I like Harry Potter and I’ve only just started reading the books, so we wanted to come and see what it’s about.”

It wasn’t just an event for the children.

Alexandra Mills, 26, said: “I’m a huge Harry Potter fan.

“This event has actually been really good, the staff have been very helpful. I found out about it and, me being a huge fan, thought I’d give it a go.

“From what I’ve done so far it’s been really good and it’s quite inventive, even the stuff they’ve just got dotted around the store, like the potions on the staircase.”
