AT the start of the year we kicked off our Let’s Make Litter History campaign.

Now we want you suggestions as to where we should do our first community litter-pick.

We’re looking for a small area, ideally no bigger than a couple of streets, a park or a square, so that we can do a thorough job of collecting all of the rubbish.

Adver editor Pete Gavan said: “We’re looking to clean up the streets of Swindon and to do that we need to know where the worst-hit places are.

“We’re finally going to be able to get out there and start making a difference, and when we finally get a location nailed down anyone and everyone will be invited to join us.

“If you’ve got an idea of where we should begin then get in touch in the comments on our website or Facebook page or by sending us an email.”

The Adver has received plenty of backing from Swindonians since the campaign's launch.

Business owners on Manchester Road supported the campaign at the start of January.

Ryan Stewart of kitchen fitters MP Suppliers said: “We try to keep our forecourt clean but we’re picking up crisp packets and kebab wrappers all the time.

“There are a lot of takeaways on this street but only a couple of bins.

“The one nearest us is emptied daily but is always full and overflowing by noon.

“This shop has been here 41 years and the last five years have been the worst, litter-wise. We need more raised bins and more common sense.”

Elsewhere the organiser of a regular Eldene litter pick, parish councillor Zachary Hawson, said: “It’s an important campaign and people need to look after their local environment.”

And today will see a litter pick in Broadgreen hosted by the Harbour Project, using equipment supplied by South Swindon Parish Council.

Organiser Sophie Boyce said: “The Adver started the campaign and we’ve wanted to do something like this for a while so we thought why not?

“It’s a great idea. It’s something a lot of people need to get behind.

“There are not many bins about and people are a bit lazy, they like to do things quick. No bins means more litter.”

The Adver’s campaign aims to fight back against the sorry sight of litter that plagues so much of our town.

If you can identify a location where we can hold our litter pick, or if you’d like to get involved, then please email pete.gavan@newsquest.co.uk with Let’s Make Litter History in the subject line or contact us via 01793 501806 or on Facebook.
