A SUPPORT network is in place for Honda staff once the factory closes next year, Swindon Borough Council says.

Money set aside by the council for those set for redundancy has been used to secure funding in from the EU.

This will be used to provide start-up support for staff who might want to set up their own business, and to back companies in Honda’s supply chain.

And Honda, in conjunction with the council and the Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership, is keen to provide retraining opportunities for its staff.

The car manufacturer has appointed a specialist company to support workers who are either looking to find new jobs locally or start up their own businesses.

Employees have had access to a series of training needs assessments as well as a range of foundation and specialist courses. Job-hunting support is in place.

Voluntary organisations and charities are also involved, producing a brochure detailing what support is available to staff with concerns over mental health and financial stability.

A ‘meet the buyer’ event for automotive manufacturing suppliers and Honda Tier One supply chain companies has been organised for June 3 at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena.

Swindon and Wiltshire-based Tier One manufacturing suppliers can email support@swindon.gov.uk for details of the support available.
