A GOOD Samaritan helped the victim of a brutal attack in the town centre - now police want to speak with him.

Detectives are investigating after a man in his 40s suffered injuries to his hands, face and head while being assaulted by a driver outside Culvery Court on Harding Street.

A man in his 20s has been arrested on suspicion of attempted GBH and remains in custody at Gablecross.

Another man driving along the road at the time of the assault stopped his vehicle and came to the aid of the victim as he was lying on the ground.

Police believe this key witness could help their investigation progress.

Det Sgt Scott Anger said: “This man helpfully intervened and his actions no doubt helped prevent the victim suffering more serious injuries.

“Unfortunately, this man had left the scene when police arrived so we would urge him to come forward and contact us on 101 as he may have important information, or dash cam footage which could assist us further.”

The attack happened at 8.30pm on Monday.
