TRAFFIC hold-ups are in store over the summer after a £2.8m project to install lights at the Moonrakers mini-roundabouts was unveiled.

The council says the scheme will – in the longer term – reduce queuing, improve safety and traffic flow and allow for better bus journeys from the town centre to north Swindon.

But many are worried about the prospect of weeks of roadworks close to the Penhill pub – and the project's chances of success.

Here is what you told us on Facebook...

John Matthews: "This is a waste of money. If used properly, the junction works perfectly well as it is. The main problem is the poorly placed bus stop town bound which is situated too close to the junction and causes a tailback every time a bus stops."

Frankie New: "I go this way to and from work, four days a week. It works fine. Yes there's some traffic in the mornings but there is everywhere, and it flows. When it's quieter there'll be a few people waiting at traffic lights that could've flowed through the roundabout in the time they were waiting. Silly idea!"

Patrick Nicholls: "What would help is a filter lane for left-hand turns each way on the approach to the double roundabout."

Patrick O'Brien: "How the hell can traffic lights cost £2.8m? We're mugs. They should run an open book, post it online, so we can see where OUR money is going."

Raymond Dear: "This junction is a nightmare as it is, if you want to get across to Whitworth Road from Beechcroft Road it’s near impossible because of the vehicles from Penhill area blocking off exit, maybe some yellow boxes in place would help."

Sue Dunmill: "I hate that area no one knows what bloody lane there supposed to be in the amount of time you get cut up on that roundabout is unreal."

John Matthews: "I can remember when this junction had traffic lights back in the 1960s, far less traffic then, but apart from the introduction of the mini roundabouts, the basic infrastructure of the area has not changed at all, so whatever is done, the limiting factor will always be the space available."

Sandy Arnold: "So long as they’re not like the lights in Gorse Hill. They take so long to change sometimes only one or two cars are sat waiting looking at each other, just waiting for lights to change with no one moving in any direction."

Gemma Lyon: "If the bollards were taken out at the flower park between Penhill and Pinehurst it would ease the traffic but I suppose that option is too cheap."

Ian Jewell: "If SBC ever answer comments on there site my question first is how old are these people planning traffic lights at Moonrakers? It failed in the 70s and we had less traffic, so which Lego set did you buy that make you think with up to five times the traffic these days its going to work now? It needs a flyover or underpass to keep traffic moving, put a dual carriageway all the way past Penhill as there is plenty of room to add a lane."

Sharon Matthews: "Leave it alone, it's fine as it is. I use this junction a minimum of four times a day and it flows."

Geoff Ricks: "A lorry driver once described Swindon to me as a series of traffic lights and roundabouts joined together by potholes!"

Mark Vincent: "2.8 million. Who even comes up with these ideas and figures? In fact who agrees that this is a good idea? If the roundabout was regularly maintained and painted so you can actually see the white lines I'm sure this cheaper option would make a big difference."

Csaba Komiszar: "Just replace the two mini-roundabouts with 1 proper, big roundabout. And maybe, just maybe stop building so many houses."
