WILTSHIRE Police stressed the importance of wearing a helmet after a cyclist avoided life-changing injuries in an accident with a road sweeper truck.

The crash happened at 12.15pm today in Wroughton.

The cyclist suffered only minor injuries.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “Luckily, the cyclist was wearing appropriate safety gear including the helmet pictured; without this, the outcome could have been extremely different.

"We understand with these unpredictable times and restrictions our exercise is a vital part of our day, however, we would like to take this opportunity to emphasise your personal safety.

“Both PCSOs have been carrying out foot and mobile patrols throughout the course of their duties today and have witnessed a number of cyclists on the roads not wearing any safety gear.

“We cannot stress enough the importance of wearing safety gear. A bicycle helmet can help sav lives, which is why it is essential to wear them each time anyone decides to take a bicycle ride. Bicycle helmets are made to do one thing, which is to help provide safety and protection from head injuries and likewise prevent the rider from life changing or fatal injuries.”
