DOZENS of young football fans set off on a four-mile walk through the countryside to raise thousands of pounds for good causes.

Around 150 people, including 12 football teams and more than 60 children from Highworth Town Juniors Football Club, spent a day enjoying the great outdoors.

The event was held several days before the government issued social distancing advice and other coronavirus precautions.

In total, they raised more than £3,000, with some of the funds going back to the football club and £800 going to the charity Doing it for Dan.

Charity spokesman Graham Hancock said: "I am amazed at the turnout and support from Highworth Town Juniors FC. The money raised will be used to support more young people in sport.

"Both of our organisations help young people to be outside and exercising. We are very proud to be associated with Highworth Town Juniors FC and look forward to more joint events in the near future. Dan would have loved the walk”.

Doing it for Dan was set up in memory of 11-year-old Daniel Climance who was kind, caring and loved all kinds of sport. The charity in his name helps young people to achieve their sporting dreams by awarding grants to individuals, teams and organisations in Wiltshire and its neighbouring counties.

The group began their trek from the HTJFC clubhouse and reached the halfway point of their walk at The Freeke Arms around lunchtime, where the children all received free soft drinks and snacks and enjoyed a break.

They returned to the club house in the afternoon for refreshments provided by Jackie and Jeff Youd.

Club chairman Mark Collett and supporter Dave Hall organised the sponsored walk.

Mark said: "Highworth Town Juniors FC would like to thank everyone who took part on the walk and look forward to seeing you all again next year.
