A KEEN karaoke enthusiast and an NHS nurse performed for their neighbours after clapping for our carers.

Holdcroft Close in Blunsdon took part in the usual round of clapping and cheering to show their appreciation for the tireless efforts of NHS and care sector staff.

And once the applause died down, the latest in what is becoming a series of outdoor musical interludes began.

Les Shoesmith, 49, sang a rousing rendition of Wonderwall by Oasis before Kelly Greensides performed her own song Irreversible, written about what she had seen on the frontline, with her 12-year-old son Caden on guitar.

Kelly is a sister at Great Western Hospital and has worked on the ENT and cancer wards.

The 34-year-old said: “I’ve seen people pass away without their friends and family nearby. They don’t get the goodbye they deserve and it really affected me.

“I wrote this song last week then I learned after I got home from work yesterday that I was nominated to sing, so Caden and I quickly worked out a melody for him to play.

“There wasn’t much time to prepare but I think we did alright.

“This song is just reinforcing the message to stay home and save lives, because it really does make a difference and it’s important. We don’t want any more people dying alone.”

Les said: “There are a lot of key workers living on this street and this situation puts everything into perspective.

“We’re quite a close-knit community and we look after each other.”

Rose Gibson asked the Adver to come along and see the performance.

She said: “It’s lovely to stand in our front gardens at a safe distance shouting across the road at each other, celebrating the NHS and hearing people sing.

“There’s always a great atmosphere and a brilliant feeling of community spirit. I hope that we will host a street party when this is over and things go back to normal.

“It’s a friendly, happy little place and we were always close with our fantastic neighbours even before the lockdown but this has strengthened that bond.

“We’re pensioners and the younger residents are always offering to help out and do little jobs for us.

“Everyone looks out for each other here, like it used to be when I was a child.”

Last week, six-year-old Macy amazed the street with her moving version of Bill Withers’ Lean On Me.

Rose added: “It was beautiful and so moving. The whole street went silent while she sang.”

The week before that, Caden sang to his mum.
