A driver was clocked on the M4 allegedly doing almost twice the speed limit.

Wiltshire’s roads policing unit posted a picture to Twitter of the officer’s speed gun, showing a reading of 128mph.

The driver was caught on the M4 between junctions 17 and 18, Chippenham to Bath.

The account Wilts Specialist Ops, which includes the county’s roads and armed officers, tweeted: “Carrying out speed checks on the M4, not only was the driver travelling 58mph over the speed limit, their view was obscured by the low evening sun. Driver reported.”

Officers are this week continuing to take part in a fortnight-long nationwide campaign clamping down on speeding.

The force has previously warned of drivers speeding on comparatively quieter roads during the lockdown.

Earlier this month, after a man was caught doing 90mph on Thamesdown Drive in North Swindon, Supt Dave Minty said: "Although these speed checks have shown us that the majority of motorists are driving safely and responsibly, there are a minority who are not.

“We understand that this is something the public is concerned about and we believe this proactive work not only provides reassurance for our communities but will also be a deterrent to those who may be tempted to drive dangerously.”
