THE government has been warned not to leave libraries behind after announcing its rescue package for the arts.

Swindon Borough Council owns the Wyvern Theatre, which is leased to HQ Theatres, as well as the Museum and Art Gallery.

Cabinet member for culture and heritage Dale Heenan said: “This announcement is great news for Swindon and will hopefully provide a vital lifeline to cultural and arts institutions across the borough.

“The arts and culture sector has been hit hard by the effects of lockdown, even more than businesses, because many places like the Wyvern Theatre remain closed on government orders.

"The headline news about £1.57bin of grants and loan is welcome, yet the devil is in the detail and there is no information available yet on who will be eligible or how to apply. There will be winners and losers.

"It appears to be very good news where the focus is on museums and theatres, but important culture centres like libraries without any income or ability to fundraise remain without any help.

"Nevertheless, if the money goes some way towards securing local jobs and providing essential resources across the cultural and heritage organisations within the town, to help weather the storm created by coronavirus, we can ensure that these groups and the valuable work they do continue to be there for local residents and future generations to enjoy.”
