A NEW village of more than 1,500 houses, two schools, shops and a park and ride facility could soon be springing up on the edge of Swindon.

One of the key pieces of the jigsaw in the town's massive expansion to the east will be debated and voted on by councillors on Tuesday.

And planning officers have recommended that they grant permission to have the Great Stall East village built.

If approved, the village will form an arrow-head shape running east from the Symmetry Park industrial development along the southern edge of the A420 road to Oxford.

A new junction will be built from the A420 serving the village and linking to the southern connector road which will run as far south as the Commonhead Roundabout.

Promoter Capital Land says its plans “create a vibrant new community, that provides a high quality of life, where residents enjoy wide open spaces, leisure and community facilities, within a community that has a strong sense of place.

“The new community will have strong interconnectivity between homes, schools, workplaces and green open spaces and will enjoy a rural setting whilst benefiting from practical connectivity to existing urban infrastructure. This combination of practical and sustainable location with distinctive rural assets will provide a strong sense of place where people will aspire to live."

As one of the central villages in the expansion it could see 1,550 houses built, with a 10-form entry secondary school, a three-form primary school, a local shopping centre, a park and ride for those want to travel into Swindon, open space and playing fields and sports pitches.

Its plans show different housing neighbourhoods to be arranged to the north, west and east of the village core, with the two schools, their playing fields and public open space to the south down to the border of the site created by the River Cole.

This will create a green buffer and separation from the new villages in the Lotmead development to the south.

Capital Land’s application adds: “The design of the development aims to reduce reliance on the private car and to encourage travel by more sustainable modes.

"One of the main objectives of the travel plan is to encourage and provide sustainable travel choices, such as walking, cycling, public transport, car sharing and car clubs. Improved bus services also contribute.”

Great Stall East is part of the New Eastern Villages expansion which could see 8,000 new homes built just across the A419 from the urban area of Swindon.

Plans for 2,500 houses to be built in the Lotmead village were approved by the council’s planning committee in June.

The committee meeting starts at 6pm on Tuesday, August 25 and a link will be provided for the public to be able to follow the proceedings.
