A Tidworth man has appeared before the justices accused of stabbing a man in the kidneys and liver on Thursday.

Joseph Bridgeman, 21, of Chestnut Avenue, entered no pleas to charges of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon.

It follows a stabbing in Rylands Way, Royal Wootton Bassett, on Thursday lunchtime. A man in his 50s was stabbed in the abdomen, with the knife scraping his kidneys and liver. Prosecutor Graham Dono told magistrates on Saturday morning it was understood the man remained in intensive care.

Bridgeman appeared before the court via video link from Gablecross police station. Wearing a grey tracksuit, he spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and home address.

Magistrates bailed him with conditions to live and sleep at his home address, abide by a 12pm to 9am curfew, not enter Royal Wootton Bassett and Swindon, and not to contact prosecution witnesses or another man with whom he was arrested.

He is due before Swindon Crown Court on October 16 for a plea hearing.

Bridgeman was represented in court by solicitor Gordon Hotson.

A second man arrested in the wake of the stabbing has been released on police bail, Wiltshire Police said.
