Festive decorations have already started appearing in the town centre - even though Christmas is still three months away.

The reason for the early appearance isn't just because people need their spirits lifting at the moment, but because of InSwindon's 'Swindon’s Illumina'.

The campaign will begin with the virtual switch-on on October 3.

The traditional Christmas star has been put in place at Wharf Green and lights have been placed on lamp posts throughout the centre.

Swindon Advertiser:

Usually, the event would take place in November and the town centre would be packed with thousands of people keen to see the big moment. Last year JLS singer Aston Merrygold flicked the switch.

But this year, because of Covid-19 and social distancing regulations, the event has had to move online and will take place across social media on Saturday, October 3 between 6pm and 7pm.

The event will include a Twitter wall, where viewers can send their festive messages.

The campaign aims to draw in footfall to the town centre through "visual, virtual and digital experiences across the festive season".

This will include a projection and lighting show in the town centre during the switch-on moment. The lights will remain in the centre until January 6.

Visitors to the town centre will notice the ‘Luminary Business Trail’ which will see a number of stars lighting up windows across the town centre.

A virtual Christmas market will also be in place across InSwindon’s social media pages.
