Problems with drains at a Queens Drive underpass were highlighted again over the weekend as raw sewage flooded the area.

There were similar issues last autumn and winter and parish councillors are demanding action.

Angry South Swindon Parish Council chairman Chris Watts said: “ South Swindon parish council has been in contact with Thames Water over the last 18 months to get this problem resolved.

“We can’t have this situation where raw sewage is spilling out onto public highway in this way.”

Thames Water said the sewers carried far more wastewater than they have capacity for and the system was full.

Here’s what told us on Facebook...

Angie Kearns: “This has been happening for many years now, they should sort out the sewage and drainage system once and for all.

“Swindon’s sewage system is Victorian, never built to withstand all the additional housing.

“Time they did something long-term.”

Martin Campbell: “Clearly Thames Water have bigger priorities. Who in their right mind would run a sewer at 100 per cent capacity?

“That’s a lot of waste to keep it going, any excess at all including rain has to go somewhere else.”

Lyn Brooks-Lloyd: “I know how people feel, my house has been flooded four times in last two months, twice last week. Luckily not sewage – it’s a storm drain blocked in my case and I am still waiting for Thames Water to sort the problem out.”

Charlie McMahon: “I remember wondering if we could swim through it but wasn’t brave enough in case I couldn’t get all the way when I was about 10. I’m 35 now. Enough said.”

Michael Preedy: “Never flooded like that when I was a kid this all down to new builds in that area pumping all that drainage into already overloaded drains in the area.”

Lindsey Hutchison: “It's so annoying as this is my son's route to school so that he gets there safely without crossing main roads.”

Kevin Hale: “More houses being built behind Coate and thousands at Wanborough but no major sewer or drainage updates.

“It’s not hard to see this will only get worse. Swindon Borough Council, sort this out.”

Kazzy Woo: “It’s better to be there instead of people’s houses.”

Dan Roberts: “Should put in a foot bridge rather than underpass.”

Jenna Palmer: “It’s been flooding like this since I was about 10.

“So if it’s ‘over capacity’ why has nothing been done in two decades?”

Roy Caswell: “Probably a mistake to put an underpass in an area that is known to flood?"

Nikkita Hicks: “Happens almost every year – or at least it did as I was growing up.”

Sonia Ketteman-Miles: “About time to start sending them a fine.

“I live in Highworth and every time we have heavy rain a drain cover is literally thrown up in the air from too much pressure.

“Yet they have ‘fixed it’ twice and lo and behold it came up again at the weekend. The residents had to try and put the cover back on.”

Simon Higgs: “Seems this million coming to fix Swindon could be wasted on drainage alone.

“This town, like the country, has gone to pot.”

Anne-Marie Couchman: “And it probably won’t be the last time.”

Owen Webster: “Anyone thought about all the electric around that area mixing with water?

“Isn’t that bad as well?”

Gary E Ratcliffe: “More unwanted houses, less natural drainage, overloaded waterways = future floods.”

Paul Mckinly: “I thought this was fixed.”

Jim Hobbs: “Seagulls will love that.”

Jack Harvey: “Is there anything Swindon can sort, raw sewage everywhere, potholes everywhere.

“Absolute joke.”

Gemma Scott: “I remember it last year too and it never gets sorted.”
