Thousands of people in Swindon have signed a petition asking the government to supply vulnerable children with free meals.

In North Swindon 1,077 people have signed the petition with a further 1,120 signing in South Swindon, putting more pressure on the towns two Conservative MPs Robert Buckland and Justin Tomlinson who voted against the plans.

Across the UK 888,025 people have signed.

The petition says: "Government should support vulnerable children and #endchildfoodpoverty by implementing three recommendations from the National Food Strategy to expand access to free school meals, provide meals & activities during holidays to stop holiday hunger and increase the value of and expand the Healthy Start scheme."

Elsewhere in the county, 1,191 people have signed in North Wiltshire, 1,600 in Chippenham and 1,109 in Devizes.

All three of those constituents are currently represented by Conservative MPs.

The free school meals campaign has made headlines recently thanks to Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford who originally brought the plans to parliament before it was rejected by Conservative MPs last week sparking national outrage.
