Eyewitnesses said armed police shot one of the men, who was holding what was said to be a rifle-style pellet gun, in the chest.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct, the police watchdog investigating the shooting, said the 57-year-old man was pronounced dead in the back of an ambulance at 2.56am.
Asked whether the other man involved in the argument that prompted the police call-out had been arrested, a Wiltshire Police spokesman confirmed no arrests had been made in connection with the incident.
