TWO people who tested positive for the coronavirus ignored government guidance and left their homes - despite knowing they were infected with the illness which has so far killed 50,000 people in England.

Police bosses have since vowed to 'continue to target' those who break the rules and put others at risk.

In a tweet published on Monday morning, Detective Chief Constable Terry Woods said: "Of the people we dealt with for covid-19 incidents this weekend two people were fined for failing to isolate when they had been confirmed as positive for covid.

"Who knows how many people they’ve infected?

"Shocking behaviour which we will continue to target."

Last week, several fines were issued to people refusing to self-isolate when they returned from overseas.

Police officers working in Burnley attended addresses after concerns were raised over a lack of self-isolation from those returning from countries where a quarantine period is mandatory.

The visits resulted a number of £1,000 fines being issued.

Over the weekend of November 13-15, officers across the county were called out to over 300 coronavirus-related incidents.

DCC Woods revealed that 68 people were fined on Friday, Saturday and Sunday after officers were called out to 333 separate covid-19 incidents.

Among those were 23 people who received fines after they were found socialising inside a shisha café in Blackburn, several who attended house parties and gatherings and more who refused to self-isolate after returning from abroad.
