A tanker became stuck on Mill Lane in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The single-track lane was closed for over 12 hours after the delivery driver attempted to reach Fairford while Junction 15 of the M4 was shut overnight.

The police say they were called to the road at 1am on Saturday after the tanker completely blocked the road.

It did not reopen until 2pm after recovery work was taken over by Swindon Borough Council.

Plans to close the northern section of the road have been in the works for some time and there was a public consultation in May 2019.

But Old Town residents are not keen on the idea, saying it would make it harder to reach the new housing development, Waitrose and the Hall and Woodhouse pub.

We asked if you wanted to see the road closed and here's what you said on Facebook:

Neville Whyley: "It’s councils who are the fools closing motorways with no obvious diversion posted in many occasions. We sometimes just have to do our best.

"I’m sure you wouldn’t want your local fuel station running out because the driver couldn’t be bothered to get it there."

Keith Moore: "All this can be simply avoided. All HGV and LGV lorries should be fitted with a sat navigation system and the sat nav should be loaded with a system call co-pilot which can have variable size and weight parameters for the type of vehicle it is.

"Honestly it the best option to avoid all this from happening."

Martin Campbell: "Building housing without the infrastructure fails yet again.

"Of course driver should have known better to be in a residential area."

Christos Flouris: "Should be closed for lorries that's for sure.

"Not for all vehicles, it's a nice little shortcut from old town to many places."

Stuart Moaby: "Hope the driver got fined."

Kenneth Pearce: "Unless you drive LGV you have no idea how easy it is to get into a bad situation like this person has."

Heather Ballard: "Perhaps make it one way with signs? It is not the drivers fault."

Sharon Matthews: "Just put a sign up, it's how the laws of the road have worked all these years."

Karen Sheppard: "This isn't a problem road. Its only fools like this who can't read road signs."

Tom Saxon: "Not every road has a warning sign. Genuine mistake it happens. Get over it."

Vince Comley: "They should make it one way from Old Town as far as the new houses at the bottom."

Paul Conetta: "Tadpole Lane is a prime example of this problem."

Peter Harris: "He is meant to be a professional driver and as such shouldn't make this type of mistake.

"He should have checked route access to his destination beforehand to avoid any hazards like this narrow impassable road or bridges weight limits."

Ruth Pepper: "Cars and vans use that road for short cuts.

"You want to see the numbers of lorries that trundle through our Royal Wootton Bassett High Street. They have no business there.

Jamie Barber: "No one died, he made a wrong turn, hasn’t everybody done that?

"Get over it."

Jill Henderson: "Vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are clearly banned. There is a large sign."

Michael Buck: "Why doesn’t he use a sat nav?"

Brian Dickson: At 1am in the morning, like he is going to see every sign in the dark.

"If it was a car or van, no problem, but it can't have been properly signed at the junction."

Alex Luckes: "That’s unbelievable. That is driving without due care and attention if ever I saw it."

Sharon Deverall: "Thought trucks had a reverse gear."
