The rose garden at one of Old Town’s parks is being refreshed after 20 years.

Gardeners at the Town Gardens have been replacing soil and roses in the area so the new plants have the best chance to thrive.

Aaron Hedges, who is overseeing the work, believes it’s about time the work is done.

He said: “We just want to keep it going for the public, to keep it nice for everyone to come and enjoy.

“At the moment it won’t look too good because it’s the winter, but when it blooms in the summer we’re hoping that more people will come and visit.”

Aaron was part of the team that won the City of Bath trophy at the national Britain in Bloom awards last year - one of the most coveted prizes at the event.

Neil Hopkins, chairman of the leisure and amenities committee at South Swindon Parish Council, said the work will add a traditional look to the area thanks to the types or roses they’re planting.

He added: “The rose garden has been there pretty much since the park was established.

“But the soil eventually becomes rose sick and so they need to be replaced.

“We’re setting it up to be really beautiful with strong growing roses for the next 15 or 20 years.

“They haven’t been done in a while so after next year we’ll have completely new roses and they’ll flower strongly.”
